800,000 homes missing

Reading time:

There is a lack of affordable housing with a good quality of life in Germany. A study conducted by the Pestel Institute on behalf of the ‘Social Housing’ association speaks of a shortage of up to 800,000 homes. The Ampel coalition had set itself the goal of increasing housing construction to a total of 400,000 flats per year, 100,000 of which would be social housing. These figures have by no means been achieved. Given the unchanged unfavourable conditions, the figure could be even lower by 2024. This means that the existing housing deficit of around 700,000 flats from 2022 could not be reduced by 2023; on the contrary, the deficit is expected to increase by a further 100,000 flats.
