More than 30 per cent of greenhouse gases - the construction sector must act

Reading time:

Buildings currently account for 12 gigatons of greenhouse gases worldwide but could save up to two gigatons (IPCC, 2023). Nevertheless, the construction sector is still not on track to fully tap into this savings potential. Today, about 37 per cent of energy- and process-related CO₂ emissions and more than 34 percent of global energy consumption are attributed to buildings. Since 50 per cent of the buildings that will exist in 2050 have not yet been built, it is urgently necessary to fundamentally change the way we construct and use buildings. This is the conclusion drawn by experts from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). More facts and analyses on energy in the building sector are available on the UNEP's website.
