At least 607,000 people in Germany were without a permanent residence in 2022, with around 50,000 being homeless. On June 30, 2022, the figure was 447,000, according to the BAG Homeless Assistance (BAG W). Compared to the previous year, 2021, the number of homeless people increased significantly, mainly due to the rise in homeless refugees, particularly from Ukraine. The BAG W's estimates complement the official statistics from the Federal Statistical Office, which do not capture all homeless people, such as those living with friends or on the streets.
